The Effects of Peritoneal Dialysis Fluid and its Components on the Differentiation of White Blood Cells into Fibrocytes. (May 2012) Hannah Elizabeth Starke Department of Biology Texas A&M University Research Advisor: Dr. Richard Gomer Department of Biology Kidneys filter out toxins which accumulate in the blood. In order to replace the function of the kidneys in patients with kidney damage, fluid is injected into the abdominal cavity, and after 4-8 hours, during which the fluid has collected waste products, the fluid is removed. This process is called peritoneal dialysis or PD. Though effective in detoxification, PD can come with a grave side effect: the formation of scar tissue in the abdomen. To form this scar tissue, white blood cells leave the blood and develop into cells called fibrocytes. A blood protein called Serum Amyloid P (SAP) inhibits the development of fibrocytes. I investigated how the dialysis fluid and its separate salt components affect the development of fibrocytes. I found that dialysis fluid and its component salts sodium chloride and sodium lactate all caused significant increases in human fibrocyte development in tissue culture. I then tested the effect of PD fluid and its components on the ability of SAP to inhibit fibrocyte development. I found that whole PD fluid and sodium lactate decreased the ability of SAP to inhibit the

Diagnostic Value of Measurement Specific Gravity by Refractometric and Dipstick Method in Differentiation between Transudate and Exudate in Pleural and Peritoneal Fluid
Background: Accumulation of pleural and peritoneal fluid is seen in some diseases. In order to diagnose the disease and start the treatment, one of the most important actions will be to differentiate between exudates and transudates. The objective of this study was to determine the diagnostic value of measuring the specific gravity of the fluid through...

Abstract Background: Mesothelium is composed of a single layer of mesothelial cells attached to a thin basement membrane supported by subserosal connective tissue it plays an important role in homeostasis, wound healing, fluid transport and inflammation. The introduction of peritoneal dialysis (PD) as a modality of renal replacement therapy has provoked much interest in the biology of perito...
متن کاملThe Effect of a Single Session of Eccentric Resistance Exercise on Some Parameters of White Blood Cells
It is reported that resistance exercise causes an elevation of white blood cells (WBC) and some of its parameters such as neutrophils (NUT) and lymphocytes (LYM) but there isn’t enough study about eccentric exercise (ECC). So, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a single session of eccentric resistance exercise on some parameters of white blood cells. Twelve volunte...
متن کاملHydroalcoholic extract of Crocus sativus effects on bronchial inflammatory cells in ovalbumin sensitized rats
Objective: Inflammation is one of the major components of asthma. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of C. sativus extract on total and differential white blood cells (WBC) count in lung lavage fluid (LLF) of ovalbumin-sensitized rats. Materials and Methods: Forty rats were divided into five groups (n = 8 for each group) as control (C), sensitized with injection and inhalation of ovalbumin (OA...
متن کاملCorrelation between Ultrafiltration Coefficient and Effective Lymphatic Absorption Rate in Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: A Possible Paradigm Shift
Background: The relative contribution of transcapillary water movement and lymphatic reabsorption in peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a critical issue, particularly in patients with ultrafiltration failure (UFF). Based on routine results obtained from the PD Adequest 2.0 software, the present study aimed to re-evaluate the separate effects of transcapillary water movement and lymphatic reabsorption ...
